The Wheatbelt Women's Health Hub received an award in the category of Excellence in Rural and Regional WA at the recent ConnectGroups Self Help and Support Groups 2013 gala night.

Secretary, Julie Ashworth, said  the award was a celebration of the achievement for all those involved with the Wheatbelt Women's Health Hub Inc.

The group began as an idea that grew with cups of tea and ginger nut biscuits at the home of president, Wendy Steed in December 2011. The founders could see the need for women and families in York to have access to a place where they could go for information sharing, counselling, financial, physical and emotional support.

The group was incorporated in August last year. The Shire offered use of the old York Tennis Club in November and donations from people in the community helped furnish it. A grant from ConnectGroups provided funding to complete the fit out.

In February this year the doors were opened to the public. "Since then an average of 27 women or more have come through the doors for our Tuesday pamper day every week. "We also offer workshops, support groups, counselling, educational workshops as well as weekly singing lessons, art classes, resources and referrals including information on debt, Mrs Ashworth said.

Strong networks and relationships have been established with the York Men’s Shed, York Community Bank,  the York CRC, York Health Pharmacy, Perts Pantry, Act Belong Commit, One Life Incorporated, Medicare Local and the office of our local parliamentary representative, Mia Davies MLA, she said.

The support of these groups and individuals along with the Shire and the community has encouraged the committee to continue to provide for the needs of women and families and have a positive impact on their health and well being, Mrs Ashworth said.

"The award is recognition of the hard work and hours of volunteering by all involved. "It will also provide credibility when applying for future funding," she said
